The Princess Bride
is a 1987 movie based on a book, with that same book at the heart of the film. This set encapsulates that idea: there are a variety of ways to display and play with this build, with the brick-built book standing as the central pillar. Open the book and the landscape moves with it; remove the book and you'll discover the story's narrator and his increasingly immersed grandson.
I designed this set to be as versatile as possible, while leaving a relatively small footprint. I wanted something that really brought all those iconic moments together, where the focus was on the character of the scene itself, rather than sprawling landscapes.
Personally, I believe this would make a great set as it serves as both a display piece and incorporates play features. The seven mini-figures -- Princess Buttercup, Westley, Vizzini, Fezzik, Inigo Montoya, and the grandfather and grandson -- can be posed in a variety of ways to re-enact scenes, or create those that never made it to the movie. Why not have the grandson scale the Cliffs of Insanity, too?
A quick overview of the features:
-
Seven iconic characters depicted as minifigures.
-
Two external dioramas to recreate scenes with.
-
The book at the centre of the piece opens, revealing the detailed pages inside. The Princess Buttercup and Westley minifigures can be posed amongst the artwork, and the book can close with them standing inside.
-
The book can be removed to be displayed independently, and the minifigures can be displayed in place of the book.
-
There's a hidden room behind the book, within the Cliffs of Insanity, where
The Princess Bride
is being read. Take a close look at the book in the grandfather's hand! This more modern setting is neatly tucked away, and contrasts sharply with the more fantasy-inspired setting around it.
Thank you for looking at this model! I had a huge amount of fun designing and building it, and I hope any
Princess Bride
fans will get a kick out of it.
