LEGO Insects

作者:hachiroku24 / 发布于:2021-02-08

Insects are some of the most amazing creatures in the world, you can find them in any shape or colour you may imagine. I made the Honey Bee recently, and I enjoyed the building process so much that I spent the last few days making insects.

I made 5 different models that I consider interesting, not only as animal, but also how they look together as a LEGO creation. I will introduce you these creatures:

Blue Morpho Butterfly : From Mexico, Central America and South America. This one is specifically a Morpho Peleides. The most interesting thing of this butterfly is the blue colour in its wings, caused by millions of tiny scales diffracting the light. That's why you can observe different shades of blue in the wings. The wide span of this butterfly ranges from 7.5 to 20 cm.

Hercules Beetle (or Dynastes) : From the rainforests of Central South America. This is my favourite one, by far, and the longest beetle in the world with an incredible strength. Only males have the characteristic horns. Including the horn, these beetles maybe 17 cm long.

Asian Lady Beetle : The lady beetle is originally from Eastern Asia, but it has been artificially introduced in North America and Europe. The common colour pattern is red with black dots, and a white and black prothorax. It's quite small, it ranges from 5.5 mm to 8.5 mm.

Western Honey Bee : You can find these bees all over the world, but it's possible that their origin is placed in Africa or Asia. These bees are amazing animals, they create colonies that are organized by complex communication like dance language. In this world, they are essential to pollinate plants and, also, the honey. There are different sizes: Worker bees are 10-15 mm, drones 15-17 mm and queens 18-20 mm.

Praying Mantis : From Europe, but they can also be found on North America or Asia. Females are bigger and stronger than males, that are usually more active and agile. The big eyes and legs makes them very efficient predators. Females are 7-9 cm long and males 6-7 cm.

I thought about building a small base for each insect, but I realized they work better as independent models, so they can be placed anywhere.

Only the Hercules Beetle and the Blue Morpho Butterfly are in real life-size. Sadly the Mantis, the Bee and the Lady Beetle are way bigger than the real-life insects, but it helps to notice the shapes and colours, and they look better as LEGO models.

Thank you!
